Common Linux Server Log Errors

Error

In the daily routine of a Linux Administrator, you are supposed to check the logs of your server to ensure that your servers are secure and if your servers are facing any vulnerabilitiy or errors,you can resolve the issues. Following are the common errors Linux admins find in their servers logs.

Error 1.

Mar 12 11:06:31 vps1 smbd[9165]: [2013/03/12 11:06:31, 0] passdb/pdb_get_set.c:pdb_get_group_sid(211)
Mar 12 11:06:31 vps1 smbd[9165]: pdb_get_group_sid: Failed to find Unix account for alex

Soluton:
Remove user alex from samba passwd file becuase above user account does not exist on server anymore. so run command:

# smbpasswd -x alex

To list all samba users:

# pdbedit -L


Error 2.

Mar 18 18:42:37 php vps1[30657]: [2013/03/18 18:42:37, 0] param/loadparm.c:set_boolean(2876)
Mar 18 18:42:37 php vps1[30657]: ERROR: Badly formed boolean in configuration file: “n”.
Mar 18 18:42:37 php vps1[30657]: [2013/03/18 18:42:37, 0] param/loadparm.c:lp_bool(2288)
Mar 18 18:42:37 php vps1[30657]: lp_bool(n): value is not boolean


Solution:

Enable symlinks as this issue can be caused because of symlinks being used in the samba share. So add following lines in global secution of smb.conf

follow symlinks = yes
wide links = yes

Error 3.

Solution:
This error can be caused because of IPV6 or Iptables6 enabled on the server. So just disable it.

Error 4.

Mar 18 19:22:01 vps1 named-sdb[29899]: error (unexpected RCODE REFUSED) resolving ‘www.indivar.biz/A/IN’: 208.109.255.1#53

Solution:
This error can be caused because dns is unable to resolve hostname www.indivar.biz to this ip address.

Error 5.

Mar 13 10:10:27 vps1 avahi-daemon[2699]: Invalid query packet.
Mar 13 10:17:16 vps1 last message repeated 3 times
Mar 13 10:23:26 vps1 last message repeated 3 times

Solutions:
Avahi daemon in default daemon in Linux.The Avahi daemon behaves like a local dns server which make the compter accessible with its local machine name and facilitates sharing of files and printers.Above message occurs whenever a server sends incorrect type of packets to the server.To resolve this message, you can update your systems avahi daemon.
